if it's freedom
we are looking for
free as a bird
wings so we can soar
free like the wind
carrying us away
sweet poems and songs
those we've loved and heard
what if the world
stopped turning
simply quit spinning
what if the world
stopped burning
simply quit churning
what could universe
ever be learning
some free spirit
still we're yearning
radical radiance
plunging obedient light
thrusting into darkness
illuminating universal creed
that universal cred
everything we really want
everything we truly need
freedom feeds us hope
nourishing both heart and soul
all those flourishing good vibrations
allowing us to bend and cope
we've witnessed freedom
disappearing into nothingness
relapse before our very eyes
one might imagine freedom
collapsing into starkness
still we would search
try to detect right
lapse into what is left
some dialect of sacredness
speaking about fleeting freedom
along with trying privilege
manifesting a different language
some may never learn to speak
what if your divine tongue
turned to emboldened freak
what if your beating heart
realized miracles and psalms
morally and ably growing
when there is that brilliant light
air and water
nourish every divine thought
every confining moment
we are here
demands upon this spinning globe
enslavement is what we all should fear
prisoners of our own dark thoughts
chained to doctrines and documents
constitutions that shackle thought
blindfolding freedom
blindsiding privilege
so no one can see
when we shut our eyes
blindly finding nought
mindlessly we can stand it
locking freedom and privilege up
all those mocking politics
defrocking free thought
like it was sin and sacrilege
mock-ups of every damned and cruel device
castles and fortresses rising in elite kingdoms
flying flags and unfurling borders
hurling bombs and rockets
martial law and bitter orders
lording it over embittered people
rioting in loud streets
economy crowded into foreign markets
blasting the very thought of freedom
right out of innocent ears
flames out of bulging eye sockets
tanks greeting freedom
such arrogance and fire
total war defeating privilege
distilling peace into fiefdom
evaporating bubbles of progressive thought
stirring irrational violence with fatal destruction
all that careless war has wrought
freedom's scars and bleeding wounds
damage beyond any good and moral thought
harsh screams echo throughout avenues of vicious sounds
grievous corruption leaves us ungrounded
destruction replaces privilege and freedom
unfounded tragic indignity
peace is such a fragile place
now freedom and privilege
have been buried again
hurried into mass graves
alongside multitudes of executed souls
bullet holes in every head
marks left by fascist ghouls
a far right nightmare in every stead
destroying privilege and freedom
constituting evil goals
whatever is on freedom's mind
does clever privilege really care
what if revered peace is something
we can never truly find
what if freedom is something
we will never bravely share
will the cold sea rise up to save us
will bold divinity create some miracle
what if humankind just disappeared
what if peace and freedom
were simply never here nor there
if you sin or kill
lose your soul
what is profoundly deep
within the raging sea
those sacred things
we never truly see
does it really matter
maybe the answer
would be somehow simpler
dancing winter night into summer day
instituted by some crowing necromancer
we compassionate humans
just need
to be a bit wiser
this towering romance
just a little flatter
